Real Life Human Hamster Wheel

I went for a run today. My first one back since running the Ojai Marathon last Sunday. Most of my quad soreness is gone now and least you should think that I've been slacking off from working out I've actually been doing some spinning in lieu of running.

It felt good to run again though. As much as I love spinning, running will always be my first love. I did 5 easy miles today just to ease back into it. Felt weird to run again after taking the whole week off. I don't think I've ever taken this many days off before.

I did my running today in the gym but what's unique about my run today was that I ran three of those five miles on a regular treadmill...

and two on this thing...

Looks like a regular treadmill right? But it is actually a Woodway Curve non-motorized treadmill powered by you. This machine does not come with any plugs because you are the energy source. I walked into my gym this morning and saw this new piece of equipment and was curious about it so I hopped on for a 2 mile "run" but it was very difficult on this thing. I ended up doing a combo of speed walking and running in order to catch my breathe. In fact, it felt more difficult running on this thing than running outside. The website says that you burn 30% more calories running on this thing than with conventional treadmills. Plus, because of the curved shape, I felt less impact while running. Actually walking fast on this felt like running at a ten minute mile pace. After just one mile, I was sweating like crazy and out of breathe. Made me feel like a running newbie. After 2 miles on this thing, I was done! Felt like I had sprinted up a hill. Needless to say that I am in love with this thing. I am going to continue to use it in the coming days and weeks and see if it improves my fitness level. In the meantime, I need to go and do some of this...

Wow! That treadmill looks awesome! But anything that would make it *harder* to run.. ahhhh!
